February 2009 Championship Show

Arun Leisure Centre,
Felpham Way,
Felpham,
Bognor Regis,
West Sussex,
PO22 8ED

Sunday 22nd February 2009

Judges:
  Tony Moore (Tobarela) Dogs
  Tony Lee (Constones) Bitches
Referee:
  Bill McKnight (Belnite)

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and committee of the club for inviting me to judge dogs at the show today. Many thanks must go to my very competent stewards, Joe Samby, Andy Land and Mike Davies for the work they all did to ensure things were all in order for a well run show. Last but not least to all exhibitors for a pleasing entry and for allowing me to assess their dogs.

"I always try to look for dogs that show overall balance for height to weight ratio, alert, healthy, fit, well conditioned and move freely with purpose and drive. Overall, the condition and fitness of most on show today was very good but there were a few dogs that were carrying far too much weight. Also a few with heavy, coarse, dirty and ungroomed coats that gave off a strong, unpleasant smell. This is not acceptable. This can be put right with a little time, effort and attention."

Tony Moore

"The Committee obviously worked hard to make this a successful and well run Show.  The hospitality was excellent and I must thank my stewards, John and Lee, for their good services during the day.

"From a bitch entry of 112, some of the classes had sufficient depth of quality to make decisions in these challenging, and I was pleased with my final line-up which showed a uniformity of correct breed type.  As ever, movement still gives me cause for concern.  I can offer no universal remedy, but each animal has its own optimum pace at which it could move correctly and it needs the co-operation of a friend with a good eye to help one find the right speed.  Toplines on the move are not good, but at least they were not standing like rocking horses to level them out!  Since I last judged, shoulders and fronts have deteriorated alarmingly. There were more than a handful with up-right shoulders and insufficient width of chest, and whilst it may be appealing to some people, Staffords feet should not be set pin toed – they should turn out slightly at the pasterns.  I thought at first that this was merely a handling fault, which it was in some cases, but there were those, who when gently dropped into a natural stance, were still pin toed with consequent effects on the elbows.

"I was very mindful of ‘fit for life; fit for function’, and thankfully there were not many couch potatoes and none that looked as though they could profit from a good meal nor with exaggerated tuck-ups.  In fact most were in very good order and a credit to their owners as good examples of the breed."

Tony Lee

1st TILLCARR RENEGADE FLAME

Topsize B/B of outstanding quality. He balances out so well when viewed from any angle, height to weight ratio, beautiful clean strong head shape with correct proportions, great depth of skull and breadth of muzzle, lips clean and tight with good underjaw, correct bite with big teeth, well set dark eyes with well placed neat ears which he uses well to create that alert keen expression which followed my every move. Strong, straight front, shoulders well laid back, great pasterns and feet, ample spring of rib with deep brisket, well tucked up at loin, level topline which was maintained on the move, good strong solid back end that is well angulated and muscled. This dog is so balanced that it allows him to move with purpose and drive. He is hard to the touch with his condition and fitness first class. This is the first time I have seen this dog in his short show career but hopefully I will be seeing him more in the future winning top honours. So it gave me great pleasure to award him his first CC and Reserve Best In Show. I wish you all the very best for the future. Well done!
