June 2013 Championship Show

The Mountbatten Centre,
Alexandra Park,
Portsmouth,
Hants
PO2 9QA

Sunday 2nd June 2013

Judges:
  Norman Berry (Rendorn) Dogs
  Lesley McFadyen (Araidh) Bitches
Referee:
  John Ryder (Kannechor)

My thanks to all for their attendance. My special thanks to the committee people who strived to make the show a success, along with my two stewards. I found no faulty mouths. All dogs were in good condition, perhaps the fact remains, that in today’s financial climate it is most unwise to invest in dogs which don’t come up to scratch as far as fitness and presentation is concerned. Movement can be a problem. There were a small number which needed more ring training to enhance their placings. Overall I was quite satisfied by the quality on display and my thanks to those who entered.

- Norman Berry

My thanks to the Committee and members of the Club for inviting me to judge and for making me very welcome on the day.  Especial thanks to the exhibitors for entering under me, I hope you all enjoyed your day and whether your dogs were placed or not you can be sure I really appreciate the opportunity to assess them.  On the day I would have to say that the variation and divergence in type of the bitches entered made me scratch my head on a few occasions and although I arrived at the decisions for my class winners fairly easily, for the others placed orders were decided by a certain amount of give and take according to their particular virtues.  At my time of life I have realised that almost everything in life is a compromise and so it was even to the end with my CC and RCC winners – to be totally honest I would really have liked to find a bitch just somewhere between the two of them but it would certainly be true that both are absolutely teeming with class. My general comments would be that mouths were acceptable, a few untidy but no major concerns; on the whole clean lipped bitches which was very pleasing as thick and heavy lips are a pet hate with me.  My biggest concern was the lack of forechest, some with little width to fronts – a Stafford needs heartroom, please consider this in future breeding. For Best in Show my co-judge, Mr Norman Berry, and I were in agreement with the dog, Zakstaff Game On J.W. – a very worthy winner.

A further predictable big plus from this well known kennel. Reserve CC.

2nd FIFA BLUE

My first encounter ever with a blue. No matter; regarding my past feelings with this colour; by the standard demands, it should be judged without prejudice and that is exactly what I did. A good sized strong looking dog with appealing head shape and expression. Well bodied and boned. Perhaps could be allowed to oose a small amount of weight, plus a little more ring training.

1st ZAKSTAFF GAME ON J.W.

Here is an example of the folly of ringside judging. Having seen this dog on many occasions It never crossed my mind I would find my self in such a misminded situation. B/B teeming with quality and oozing type and structural quality. Good expression, round darkish eye and neat ears. Good spring of rib with ,excellent shoulder placement leading to level topline. Strong rearquarters with enough turn of stifle to hock ratio which resulted a jaunty Stafford movement which seems to have been lost in many of today’s specimens. C.C. and Best In Show

Quite a pleasant surprise to find an Aussie Champ. Black brindle with strong headed credentials. Round eye placement and rose ears. Strong front and rear quarters allowing him good freedom of movement. Strongly boned with barrel ribs, well tucked up. Again, I would like a size bigger. Tail placement could be better.

Class 13: Veteran Bitch   (9, 2 absent)

When I received the entry I was delighted to find a full class of veterans, as it should be.  Each of these has stood the test of time and has their place in our breed tapestry.

1st CH TARAIEL TRINITY

Only just a veteran and still looking fabulous.  Like a few of us of more mature years she may be showing a little thickness around her loin these days but her overall condition and class are very evident as is her shining, close, healthy coat.  Retaining all the strength in head properties that she ever had, her dark eyes look straight ahead, as per the standard, and she had to win the class.  She is extremely well muscled which showed when she took to the mat, being more positive from the rear and maintaining her top line.  Love her to pieces!

S. Hirst & J. Bibby
2nd STORMPIKE CLEOPATRA OF TIKKURILAN

Wasn’t too sure whether it was her Dad or the treats her Dad had in his pocket, but it certainly had her attention – what an expression, and the grey muzzle and lovely dark round eyes only added to that!  A bigger bitch all round than the 1st placed, this one has neater feet and a great head shape with strength of underjaw.  Maybe not quite as firm a top line on the move but moved with ease and a little more drive than the 3rd placed.

Class 14: Minor Puppy Bitch   (7, 1 absent)
1st ELITEBULL ELEGANCE

A well put together black brindle bitch of 8 months showing plenty of promise for the future.  I like the definition of her head, neat ear carriage and another with beautifully dark eyes which just enhance that Stafford expression.  She has a good rib developing, strength of rear end, neat whip tail set on correctly and decent width to her front, something which was missing in a fair amount of the bitches today.  The body shape will of course continue to come and she will settle more on the move although she is very well schooled and was very attentive to her handler.  In the contest for Best Puppy Bitch I preferred her stronger muzzle although they were two lovely bitches;  moving on to the end of the show this youngster still showed her socks off and with the agreement of my co-judge by a small margin was BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.  Very best wishes for a successful future.

A.J. and D.L. Desmond
2nd DYNASTAFF INDIAN SUMMER AT SONGARIN

Giving away a month in age to the class winner this bitch has plenty of virtue whilst being of different style to the 1st.  With a great coat – short and close – she also has very dark eyes and good strength of underjaw.  This bitch is shorter in back than the winner with neat, tight feet and scored over her two litter sisters in 3rd and Res place by virtue of her development at this time.  I could see her mother in her – no bad thing!

Class 15: Puppy Bitch   (5)
1st ENGLADIAN SIMPLY SINFULL

At the upper end of the class approaching her birthday, this bitch shows all the attributes for a good future in the ring.  Although more width to her muzzle would enhance, she has a great depth to her skull, correct ear position and carriage, dark eyes and a decent depth to her brisket, which is really good to see at this stage of development.  When she was asked to she moved out really well, maintaining a good top line and showing her good order.

Mrs. D. Yarham
2nd JODEL'S FLORENTINE

A pretty red bitch of 11 months, slighter than the winner but with decent balance. Although a little narrower in front than the winner she has a correct lay of shoulder and good width to her back end. On the move she was purposeful and happy with a sound top line which she held.

Class 16: Junior Bitch   (8, 1 absent)
1st LACKYLE REALTA BEAG OF WYREFARE

A very stylish bitch with a good balance although I would prefer a touch more bone, this bitch headed another class of differing virtues.  I loved her really keen expression, ensured by her dark eyes, her neat feet with great pigmentation and the strength to her back end with a good bend of stifle and neat tail.  She has a decent enough depth to her brisket but doesn’t have the forechest at this stage.  When she moved down the mat I made a mental note on the drive she displayed.

Mr., Mrs. and Miss Beaufoy
2nd CRUDHA BREIZH IZEL

A difficult decision as I really liked this bitch but she let herself down on the move, deciding halfway along the mat that she would prefer to sit down!  A very attractive straight front, feet not quite as neat as the winner, but with a nice expression, good underjaw and bend of stifle she didn’t quite hold her top line although she has a correct length of back and rib development.

1st ASHBULL O'MEE

Loved this brindle bitch – superb quality and definitely one for the future.  Everything is there to see: chiselled, clean head with keen expression, dark ‘look at me’ eyes, neat ear carriage, strong muzzle with balanced width and depth, superb front with strong pasterns and tight feet, she’s even got the forechest that was missing in a lot of the others!  She moves very true coming towards with a grand width to her back end, just didn’t quite keep her top line on the move but ran the CC & RCC winners very close.  Best of luck for the future – I’m sure she will hold her own with ease.

Natalie Moorcroft
2nd WEISHSTAFF PRINCESS RUBY

Pity this lively black brindle came up against the class winner as she is a really nice bitch with a beautiful gloss black short coat.  She has a good depth to her skull, another with dark eyes showing a typical expression, sufficient bone and body with correct stifle angulation.  In comparison with the class winner this bitch was slightly longer cast and needs to drop further in brisket but nevertheless full of style.

Class 18: Maiden Bitch   (2, 1 absent)
1st PUREONIC ANGEL DELIGHT OF JEVACES

This brindle and white bitch – Molly – was VHC in Minor Puppy and stood alone in this class but took her time to display her charms, which included a tail that wiggled from start to finish!  She has a pleasing depth and width to her skull with dark, well placed eyes and great pigmentation, especially showing in her dark nails.   She has a decent width to her front for such a baby and time could help her top line to firm up.  Loved her exuberance!

Mr. D. and Mrs. D. Wilks
Class 19: Novice Bitch   (5, 3 absent)
1st QUINLENT SLOPPY SECONDS AT JAVAWOLF IMP

Placed 3rd in Junior class this bitch has lots going for her.  She has the most fantastic pigmentation, showing especially in her dark mask which enhances an already attractive expression, soulful dark eyes set in a clean and shapely head, good dentition and neat ear carriage.  She has good weight of bone and strong pasterns although I would prefer to see more padding to her feet.  A sturdy rear complemented by correct tail carriage and with great stifle angulation propelled her strongly from behind on the mat and she certainly has a ‘show off’ attitude.

Miss Jo-Ann Essex
2nd SUNNYSTONE OLYMPIC DREAM

Placed in two previous classes, this young black brindle bitch has a very pleasing head shape and feminine expression, good width to her muzzle, again with fabulous pigmentation.  She has good coat condition and tone and although she is shorter in back than the class winner and very shapely in body she would benefit from having a little more length to her legs. She certainly showed power in her movement and harmonised with her handler.

Mrs. G. Thomas
Class 20: Graduate Bitch   (2)
1st MITZSTAFF SCRUMMALICIOUS

A black brindle bitch of good size and substance, very well balanced and alert and on her toes throughout the class.  My notes say ‘a good honest bitch’ which I feel is a fitting description, she has what is needed in terms of expression, width, bone and body shape, showing a good rib development.  Although she would benefit from a fuller forechest she does have a reasonable depth to her brisket with good width to a well-toned rear end and scored here over the 2nd placed bitch on her overall balance.

Class 21: Post Graduate Bitch   (12, 3 absent)
1st CALLASTAFF MADAME GEORGE

Very attractive and upstanding dark brindle very similar to the Graduate class winner who was 2nd in this class.  Another sound and typical bitch with an earnest expression, looking straight ahead and concentrating on the job in hand.  Loved the strength to her muzzle, although would like to see slightly less wrinkle, she has good pronounced cheek muscles and good substance throughout for her size.  This bitch actually has a forechest to match her brisket as well as a great body shape with good rear angles and a steady enough topline.  A note to her handler:  you should display her with more confidence – she is clearly a very nice bitch!

1st TRUFFLESTAFF HASINA BAHITI

3rd in the previous Post Graduate class this bitch is of good type and balance with sufficient bone.  She could have tighter feet but her pigmentation is excellent even down to the black nails on her white foot, she has a good underjaw, well placed, dark eyes and a lovely coat.  At the front end she stands true and has a good drop of brisket, at the back end she is broad enough and moved well with drive, especially going away.  A decent all round bitch.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Hopkins
Class 23: Limit Bitch   (13, 2 absent)
1st BRIGANAH LIMITED EDITION ShCM

This bitch captured me on my first look around the ring, then held my attention throughout.  My notes said ‘staggered me’ and that is how it was!  She is a top sized bitch of outstanding virtue, reminded me very much of a ‘Monifa Kanika’ with a little more height – that piercing expression with coal black eyes, sculptured head shape with a strong neck flowing easily in to such a true front.  She has exquisite feet on strong pasterns and this one did display both brisket and forechest as she should.  To be critical she is a little longer in back than is required but she has the leg length to balance that out and with such a toned body with each part blending into the next that was never going to be a major issue. She and her handler put in a foot perfect performance giving me the best of headaches in making the decision between her and the Open bitch for top spot.  I was delighted to award her the RESERVE CC and I’m certain we will hear and see a lot more of her – thank you so much for bringing her, she is a credit to you and her breeders.

Gelena and Joachim Bowin
2nd TARAIEL RIHANNA J.W.

Any dogs that are shown from this kennel are always shown in full bloom and this bitch is no exception: gleaming coat and hard muscle tone which is always going to make a judge look again.  The prettiest of faces, she is feminine with strength, clean and powerful, with the neatest of feet.  I preferred the top line of my class winner but this bitch used her formidable hams to drive her on the mat with ease.  It is no surprise to see the amount of success she has and will have.

1st CH. DARE TO DREAM

It is plainly evident why this bitch has been so successful in the show ring – style and class stamped all over her.  My notes here say ‘fabulous’ which really says it all. Beautifully balanced throughout there is not as much of her as the Limit bitch winner but the type and quality just screams out and with those black eyes looking at you all the time you just cannot go past her.  Handled to perfection it’s hard to pick out anything in particular but as someone who does have a bit of a dog foot fetish I couldn’t fail to notice her superb feet and the clean outline from head to toe – just lovely.  She held her top line when she moved, and when she did move, boy did she move!  Panache would just about describe it. The power from behind ensured she covered the ground with ease and minimum effort.  As I have already said it was a bit of nip and tuck between her and the Limit class winner but her overall balance pipped it and I was honoured to award her the Bitch CC – I am really grateful to you for bringing her under me.

Mr. and Mrs. Mason
2nd TARAIEL CIARA J.W. ShCM

Just like her litter sister in the previous class she is a class study in strength balanced with femininity and turned out in the best fettle.  She has the darkest of eyes and is so clean lipped, just a pity that she wouldn’t use her ears to advantage.  With very good shape to her body, she has strong pasterns although her feet could have a little more padding.  Settled on the move and reacting well with her handler I much preferred her expression to that of the next placed bitch.
