February 2016 Championship Show

Sunday 21st February 2016

Judges:
  Martin Grimwood (Stormstaff) Dogs
  Joe Samby (Gamestaff) Bitches
Referee:
  Jamie Mace Janastaff

Many thanks to the Downlands SBT Club for their kind invitation to judge their Silver Jubilee show. Thanks also to my two stewards, John and Tony, for a smooth day and an excellent job well done. Special thanks saved for those who entered their dogs for my consideration, and those who accepted my decisions in a sporting manner, especially the one lady in particular who showed a dog knowing full well that he would never be my type of Stafford. Thank You. This was probably the most difficult day of judging I have had at this level. In some cases I found myself judging the whole dog which is my preference, but then in others having to try and judge the dogs piecemeal balancing out virtues and preferences, against what I would prefer, but with dogs that had less or more than I would usually require. We all, I guess, have our own unwritten standard that compliments the written, and up until today I never had to compromise either to any great degree, today was a bit different. I recently judged a show in the Netherlands with a similar entry and felt that particular show had   more quality in depth than this one. I have in the past, not considered size of entry as a determination in depth of top class exhibits. In that respect, this show was a little disappointing. Some dogs that were here have caught my eye outside of the ring but were slightly less impressive within it, others who have caught my eye were not here so remain an unknown factor. I know that all dogs are never going to be in the reckoning for the Challenge Certificate but the last time I judged on mainland UK was in 2009 and the difference is in depth of quality when you get in about them is massive.

Martin Grimwood (Stormstaff)

Firstly, I would like to say how sorry I was to hear that Ms. Nancie Booth would not be able to judge this show due to her ill health and I wish her a speedy recovery.
Secondly, I would like to say a big thank you for being invited to judge in her place. I had an excellent day, which I greatly enjoyed. I had some wonderful Stafford bitches to look over. The atmosphere was electric and having all the top awards given to bitches was a great result for their owners, exhibitors and me!

Joe Samby (Gamestaff)

Class 1: Veteran Dog   (4, 2 absent)
1st JAVAWOLF MIGHTY MOUSE

Extremely fit predominantly white dog, probably at the lower end of our weight requirement. Good expression with a round dark eye, good bite and tight in the lip, showing very decent under-jaw. Straight in the forequarters and well up on his pasterns, decent length of upper arm and good  angulation, strong muscular neck. The muscling on every rib is a credit to his fitness, ribs tapering back with a light well muscled loin and coupling. Well angulated hindquarters drove him effortlessly. His level of fitness isn't for everyone and indeed would not suit some dogs but for me it is enjoyable in sight and touch, if he looks as good as this at this level of fitness, then to me it shows the dog is made very well.
Miss J. Essex
2nd BUSHTUCKERS TUTTUTBOLDNUT

A nearly fourteen year old lad, giving away seven years to the winner. Brindle and white, more than topsize, well up on the leg and well off for bone, decent expression, neat ears, dark eye, strong muzzle and good stop, straight in the forequarters, level topline.
Mr. J. P. Elderfield
Class 2: Minor Puppy Dog   (3, 1 absent)
1st

MANARK BRONZE'S STAR

Black brindle, still very much the puppy as he should be, good expression, neat ears correct length of muzzle with a good bite within. Straight and strong in the forequarters, dark nails. Decent spring of rib and fitness for his age, good angulation and well enough off for bone, good bend of stifle and moved reasonably well.

Mrs S. L. Partington
2nd

MITZSTAFF MAKIN MAYHEM

Red with a black mask, good expression, neat ears a bit more athletic in outline and makeup, allowing him to score well in general appearance. Strong quarters on the dog, ribs well back. Brisket to elbow. Level topline and a well angulated rear. All things being equal, his outline is my preference but he didn't move how I expected him to.

Mr. M. L. & Mrs. T. A. Membury
Class 3: Puppy Dog   (5)
1st TEGUMEN SHADOW OF A SAINT

Typical standard balanced black brindle, round dark eye, good length and strength to his muzzle which housed a good bite, correct amount of stop, Straight and strong forequarters, dark nails and good angulation at pastern. Good spring of rib, I couldn't span his loin which is my preference but that will hopefully come with more exercise later on. Good rear angulations and he moved well.
Mrs. J. A. Neale
2nd TARAIEL DARTH VADER

Slightly preferred the overall outline today of this dog than the one that beat him. Standard dark brindle.  Good expression correct length of muzzle tight and clean in the lip, good head angulations, ample stop. Neck flowed well into topline, good spring of rib nice tuck up and light in the loin giving good body definition. Good rear angulation with gaskin starting to develop well. Moved reasonably well. Nitpicking between the two I went with the darker pigmentation of the winner.
S. Hurst and J. Bibby
3rd PARJACRU'S LITTLE BIG MAN JIM

Brindle dog, looking less mature at this point than the two in front of him. Topsize athletic and well made. Strong clean muzzle with width and depth, reasonably neat ears and good expression straight in the forequarters with good angulation at pastern. Level topline good rear angulation and moved well.

1st ILLORI AKINLANA JW

Very typical well constructed quality black brindle. Head balances to body, good expression dark in the eye neat ear and good bite. Straight in the forequarters well up on his paterns with neat feet.   Neck flowed well through withers into topline good spring of rib carried back with a reasonably light loin. Good rear angulation  good correct bend of stifle with gaskin developing well. He moved well and I think maturity will bring him top honours.
Miss G. L. Rowe & Mr. D. South
2nd

ILLORI AZIZI

Slightly smaller package all over, I said in the dictaphone that most of what applied to one also applies here. I preferred the strength of muzzle and expression of the first.

1st PERUNSTAFF BLACK BALANCE

Two black brindles with very little in my mind between them. Both dogs are up on the leg.
Good expression, good length width and depth of muzzle, reasonably dark eye reasonably neat ears and a good bite. Straight and strong in the forequarters up on his pasterns with good feet and dark nails. Good spring of rib carried back, today on standing fell away slightly at croup reasonable levels of fitness and light in the loin. Moved reasonably well here but less so in the challenge.
Mr. J. Pucek
2nd BULLHAWK ARCHIE BOLD

Very similar dog to first in proportions, very good expression dark eyed black brindle good length of leg and good angulation at pastern,  good bite neat ears good spring of rib and light in the loin, level topline, a dog who had very acceptable levels of fitness but I feel a tad more on both would enhance. Today in the class I preferred the movement of one.

Strong black brindle with a good expression. Good length depth and width of muzzle, excellent bite, incisors in a straight line with good well angled canines. Dark in the eye, neat in the ear correct  stop not overdone.  Good feet up on pasterns well off for bone but not overly done or coarse. Neck flows well into topline with a good spring of rib and reasonably light in the loin, good bend of stifle  and rear angulation and moved well.

OUR LITTLE CRACKER

Strong topsize blue brindle with very decent corresponding pigmentation. Strong muzzle and cheek bumps good bite. Good expression, neat ears folded back and well off for bone, straight in his  forequarters and  up on pasterns with well padded feet. A great spring of rib with reasonable body definition but a shade lighter in loin would enhance, Neck flows well into shoulders, good angulations get his feet where they should be Coat is a lot closer than most. Good bend of stifle and moved reasonably well

2nd

BRAUNSTAFF FROM HASBURY JW SHCM

Strong headed lovely-coloured Brindle dog  in a smaller package than one.  Strong underjaw and well developed cheek bumps Strong headed dog with an expression that for me would benefit from a less distinct stop than he has but will greatly appeal to others. Good bite, rose ears and an dark round eye, Straight in the forequarters and up on pasterns with good bone. Good spring of rib and definition in body.

Class 9: Post Graduate Dog   (8)
1st TRUFFLESTAFF GOLDEN GLOVES

Impressive strong black brindle with typical traditional expression. Tight in the lip, neat in the ear and reasonably dark in the eye. Well off for bone in straight and strong forequarters with good angulation at the pastern. Neck flows well into shoulders, well ribbed back, a greater level of fitness would enhance this dog. Rear angulation is correct with a good bend of stifle getting his pads into a position to provide strong columns of support with decent feet. First three in this class were very close up on each other but this dog I thought moved very well and that decided his placing.
Mr. I . Parfoot & Miss Z. Lye
2nd BONE CRUSHER OF SPIRIT-STAFFS

Black brindle dog, Good expression, round eye with decent length of muzzle strong under-jaw and reasonably clean in the lip , good depth of skull, head balances to his body. Straight and strong in the forequarters with good angulation at pastern. Good spring of rib and as one, a greater degree of fitness would enhance body definition, good bend of stifle and rear angulation in general, vertical pasterns and moved reasonably well

Class 10: Mid-Limit Dog   (4)

Such a difficult class to judge. A lot of what I would prefer to be with the first two is not specifically defined within the standard, the two points in which the third dog can be penalised within the show ring are, one is described in the most definite of terms and the other, height is less definite, but obviously a line must be drawn somewhere.

1st DYNASTAFF NORTHERN SOUL

Black brindle with a good expression good length of muzzle,  Dark eye and neat ears, Neck flows well into topline reasonable level topline on the move. Short in the back with a good spring of rib reasonably light in the loin.  Today he tended to lean into his collar, this exaggerates his rear angulation and loses him that column of support. This showed when he stood after being slightly lifted and slightly less so when he moved.
David Manito
2nd BULLBROTHERS FIFTH ELEMENT

Brindle and white who scores best for me behind the collar good spring of rib carried back and good angulations getting his feet into correct positions. His rear quarters are reasonably well muscled with decent second thigh. Straight and strong in the forequarters with good angulation at pastern.  Strong rearquarters and moved well. Good expression, dark eye, neat ears good length of muzzle.  I`d prefer a little more appearance of strength of skull in the lower jaw regions of his skull.
Messrs I. & J. R. Martinez
3rd KAGO-DOGS EXCALIBER BLESTOR

Many thanks for bringing this dog under me today knowing the restrictions that the standard would impose against him. It was an honour that he was entered for me to go over him at a conformation show. A dog that has our appearance clause in spades and most of the others. I could ramble on through the vast majority of the standard and apply it to this dog. Suffice to say, I`d be more than happy if he was mine.

Strongest class of the day. Three excellent dogs in the first three.
1st

GARFORTH KING

Topsize black brindle with a very purposeful head. Muzzle has clean lips, correct length depth and width to house a bite that is truly impressive, incisors that are set square to the jaw in all aspects forming a wide straight line ending with large strong well angulated canines. A stop that is unexaggerated making that depth of muzzle a good proportion of the overall depth of skull. Dark eye and neat ear. Neck flows well over withers and smoothly into a good strong topline. Straight and strong in the forearm and up on his pasterns, excellent spring of rib, I would prefer him lighter in the loin and a little more animated.

Miss L. & Mr. W. Davis
2nd

PERUNSTAFF AGED WARRIOR

Very good dog in a smaller package than winner. Good bite and strong muzzle, tight in the lip, dark eye neat ears and good stop provide excellent headshape and expression. Straight and strong in the forequarters, up on well angulated pasterns, his neck flows well into his level topline which he kept on the move. Good spring of rib Good angulation front and rear,  moved well and pushed 1 all the way, just as 3rd was extremely close up on 2nd. Today, after balancing virtues, I decided to go with the impressive mouth and strength of the winner. Brought back and considered strongly for RCC.

KERNEWEKGLAS FELLOWSHIP OF GODDSTAFF

Standard black brindle with white who impressed me greatly overall. Good length of muzzle with ample depth and width, Good depth tp his skull, well positioned neat ears and a dark eye. Good bite Well off for bone, neck flowed well into his shoulders on on into his topline. Depth of body balances to length of forearm and pastern. Good spring of rib, reasonably light in the loin, a shade lighter would provide slightly better definition between rib and pelvis and reasonably well muscled rearquarters with good angulation. Moved very well. I liked the dogs attitude a lot and just like second and third in limit pushed the CC winner all the way. RCC

CH. RAMBLESTAFF COS I COULD

A dog that I have appreciated from outside the ring. He scores so well when considering him from the front. Tremendous expression, neat ears well placed, dark eyes. Good head and muzzle proportions without exaggeration. Muzzle is clean and houses a good bite. Strong boned in the forequarters, with good angulation, Good spring of rib carried back,  well muscled rear-quarters with correct angulation get his pads positioned correctly. Like 1, more definition when looking from above would enhance. Moved well.
