February 2014 Championship Show

Arun Leisure Centre,

Sunday 9th February 2014

Judges:
  Steve Halifax (Jackstaff) Dogs
  Eric Galvin (Scousious) Bitches
Referee:
  Ann Gatenby (Kerrisdale)

Sincere thanks to all exhibitors from the UK and right across Europe for allowing me to judge your dogs at the Downlands Staffordshire Bull Terrier Championship show yesterday, my day was made easier by my two proficient ring stewards and I sincerely thank you both for the smooth running of the dog ring. I would like to also say a big thank you to the committee of the D.S.B.T.Club for a great show so expertly run, the hospitality shown to me on the day was second to none so congratulations and credit where credit is due, that is to each one of you.

I have already said looking when I got home through the catalogue I saw that quite a few exhibitors had travelled far from Scandinavia and right through Europe and I thank you again for the entry. It is obviously clear to see from the quality on show today from these countries that this breed is thriving well outside the UK because these dedicated breeders are prepared to travel great distances to select their stud dogs and must be commended for doing so.

I only found a couple of exhibits with slight undershot mouths, the same can be said for the couple with slight overshot mouths, for me I don’t see any real breed problems here that future selective breeding can’t fix.

There has and always will be a variation in breed type some leaning to the Terrier the others the Bull, length of back and size needs to be watched along with toplines it’s all about balance or should be. My winners today were selected on what I thought to be a good blend of Bull & Terrier, balanced without exaggerations which would be classed as being detrimental to the breed. I didn’t judge today to find faults in any exhibits I looked for their virtues, quality and breed type which was there in abundance and I found in my winners today.

Steve Halifax
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Firstly let me say a big thank you to the committee of Downlands SBTC for inviting me to judge bitches at their Championship Show. I had an amazing weekend and after watching Southampton FC play on the Saturday we drove down to Bognor for what the Americans call a meet and greet meal. Then after a few drinks we retired to our hotel waking the next day feeling refreshed.

I found the overall standard of the bitches to be very good although one bitch did limp. After speaking to the gentleman exhibitor, he agreed that he would withdraw her. There were some nice surprises amongst the entries, which I will explain within my critique.

I thank my ring stewards for the day, Nigel Hunt and Joe Samby for doing a first class job.
As always my class winners all had the following, good head, nice ears, good strong bite, straight front nice, good bone, shoulder placement, good rib, level toplines, good back ends.

Eric Galvin

Class 1: Veteran Dog   (2)
1st UK SLOV WORLD MULTI & INTERNATIONAL CH STORMBULL SOLO

What more could anyone write about this multi award winning black brindle dog that hasn’t been said before, he’s a credit to the breed a real ambassador and at nearly ten years old can still hold his own, he was shown it super condition and did everything expected of him by his owner, live long and healthy old lad.

Mr. J. Mace & Mr. G. M. Davies
2nd VEKLORRA BARNEY REBEL

A black brindle dog good size with straight front, correct bite well shaped head, dark eye, he has a level topline and moved well for his lady handler, he was unlucky to meet such an outstanding winner today but obviously enjoyed his day, out he’s a credit to you.

Miss Penny Funnell
Class 2: Minor Puppy Dog   (7, 2 absent)
1st EARL BOOGIE OF SPIRIT-STAFFS

A standard red dog I see from Germany who has a strong well shaped head correctly proportioned, correct bite dark eye for me just an observation I would have loved tighter ears but this didn’t hinder him from winning a good class, he has lovely body proportions with correct straight front and level topline, he moved soundly on good rear quarters, a very nice youngster scored marginally over the second place winner on being shorter in the back.

Patrick Gabel
2nd BULLBROTHERS FIFTH ELEMENT

A black brindle with white chest and feet, standard size well shaped head with good mouth and ears , dark eye he has a level topline and good straight front moved well for his handler today, I see from the catalogue was sired by my CC winner a very nice youngster.

Mr. I. & Mr. J. R. Martinez
3rd JEFMOR BASILIO

Another black brindle dog with white on chest and feet, very much a baby this one and was really hard to handle for his lady owner, his head is not as strong as my two winners above him but when alert has a nice expression, dark eye and correct rose ears, he has good body proportions fore and aft but moved ok although a bit erratically today, I’m sure with puppy classes and maturity time he will be sorted.

Black brindle dog with a strong without being over done head, correctly proportioned he has a keen expression complimented with having a correct bite and dark round eyes and neat rose ears, sound and correct in all body departments and again another one who moved very well for his handler well deserved his place, so good luck with him.

K. A. & S. A. Fulford
3rd MITZSTAFF UNION JACK

Another black brindle dog standard sized very similar to the second place dog so many of the attributes I awarded to him could be assigned to this dog, he is hard to fault and has many virtues to like, he really looked good and went well for his handler just so unlucky today to meet the two dogs who edged him today.

Black brindle dog slightly smaller than my winner, he too has a strong powerful head correctly proportioned with good bite neat ears and dark eye, his front is straight and he stands on well padded feet, he’s a short backed dog with plenty of substance who does really well for his handler, comparing him against my winner I just preferred the cleaner foreface on 1, good luck with him.

Mr. D. & Mr. K. Molineux
3rd TRUFFLESTAFF GOLDEN GLOVES

Black brindle dog different type to the two in front of him, I see he was unplaced in Yearling dog and the lady handler loved him to bits so good luck with him and enjoy him.

2nd ASHBULL O'TOOLE

A good sized brindle dog lots to like about him and again without repeating myself many of my class winner comments would equally apply to this dog they were very similar animals, he too has correct bite and a well shaped head he is also sound in all departments and moved so well but the expression of my winner finally decided his place today a lovely dog.

Belinda Efreme
3rd JECANIBO'S KI-ABI-MUNDI

A slightly smaller black brindle dog I see brought here today from the Netherlands, he has a strong well shaped head with the required deep stop, correct bite, dark round eyes and good wide underjaw, his front is well boned and deep his legs are straight with elbows tucked in and his feet are well padded, he is short in the back has a good tuck up and moved with drive.

2nd MICHENIL MAGICAL MIDNIGHT AT BOSCADOR

A blue brindle dog shown in good condition lots to like about him, I liked his make and shape and his virtues far out way his fault, he did everything asked of him by his lady handler today unlucky to meet such a good winner.

Miss Kerry Daly and Mr. Phil Lees
Class 11: Limit Dog   (14, 4 absent)
1st ITCHEBOREN NIGHT FURY DUSTBLAZE

Black brindle White flash on his Chest who came from Spain today and im glad he did. He’s a good sized dog who has a beautiful strong well defined head, his stop is deep his head wide without being overdone his muzzle broad and his underjaw deep, he has a correct bite and dark round eyes topped off with small neat rose ears, he looks as good side on as he does front on, he has correct angulation and holds his topline, he’s fit and in great condition, moved well both ways and I was pleased to award him the Reserve CC today im sure he will get titled so good luck for the future.

Mr. B. Monestina
2nd SATIP SORBOSS AT VRABARBULL INDONA

Black brindle dog of similar make and shape to my winner so again most of my comments for him would apply to this dog my final choice came down to my winner having cleaner lips and I was splitting hairs here, they are two nice dogs, just to help the handler I also felt he stands him too wide on the front and points his feet straight ahead the feet should turn out.

M. Choma and M. Matviakova
3rd KERNEWEKGLAS FELLOWSHIP

Black brindle with white foot and white chest mark. A slightly taller dog than my two winners but another dog with what I felt is a well shaped head without coarseness, he has a correct bite and round eyes his ears are neat small and rose shaped which he used well today, he was warm today and panted and that with the ears gave a pleasing keen expression, he has a bit more leg as I said but no way looks leggy, he has enough rib and bone and tuck up to compliment, his topline too was held on the move and his handler got the very best out of his well-conditioned fit exhibit.

1st ALBERMARBULL ICE WHITE

A class today of fine exhibits and a few went home cardless but I only had five places to award so sorry if you missed the cut. My winner is a balanced white dog who for me stood out in great company; he’s not over done in any way has the most appealing head shape that draws you to him, it’s deep, defined broad without any fleshiness and has beautiful small rose ears these along with his dark round eye really appealed to me, he stood alert and square and I feel looked great from all angles, he has a well boned straight front deep brisket and correct shoulder placement. He was shown in fit condition and has well sprung ribs short in the back and has the required tuck up that led to him holding a level topline driven along by strong hind quarters, I was so pleased to award him his first CC for me he shone out today congratulations and good luck for the next two tickets.

Mrs. A. Hart
2nd ANGELICSTAFF BANG BANG BOOGIE

A standard beautiful top quality red dog from Denmark who has won many shows and it’s easy to see why, he has many virtues starting with his head shape being strong and classy his bite is correct with large teeth he’s another dog looking good from all angles who stands four square without his handler having to place his legs that says something….. His height, body proportions and angulation blend to give you a picture of balance, thank you for giving me the chance to go over him he’s a credit to you.

Mr. K. Jensen
3rd CH SUURISUUN BOPPINGHAMS BIRULAI

A red and white dog of standard size having many virtues so again I can see why he’s a worthy champion, most of what I have said about the other two dogs would apply to this chap he really is a nice make and shape, I’m not taking anything away from him but for me to balance the picture I feel he needs to have just that wee bit more lift in relation to his back length, he does move well and shows his socks off for his lady handler, one to be proud of for sure.

1st TRUFFLESTAFF TOFFEE TRUFFLE

Nice pied bitch who at nine and a half years stood out in this class. Looked like butter wouldn’t melt, but had an almost “Go On! I dare you!” look about her. She is in very good condition for her years, and the owner should take credit for that. Moved freely and handled well.

Mr. & Mrs. S. Hopkins
2nd BORGSTAFF HATCHEPSUT JW

Ten and a half year old black brindle lady, whose grey muzzle gives away her age. She still holds the quality that she had as a younger girl. Moved well and handled well.

nice tidy bitch of eight months. Black as coal, with a strong but feminine head. I liked her as she entered the ring and was not disappointed when I put my hands on her. Handled to perfection, which showed off all her attributes. Moved freely.

Mrs. S. Houwaart
2nd CANAKEY SWEET COOL DELIGHT

Red pied baby of eight months, who gave the first a run for her money. This young girl has all the qualities that her breeding brings to the party, and when she develops, these two will swap places on a regular basis. As I expected she moved easily up and down the mat.

This black brindle of eleven months stood head and shoulders above in this class. Her overall picture is one of class, she is what I call a nose to tail stafford. She had me bought and sold today and I would have taken this one home. A big future for this one I think. Handled superbly and moved like a dream.

Mr. P. & Mrs. E. Stanway
2nd ELITEBULL ELEGANCE JW

This girl ran the first very close and it was only in the last seconds that I made my decision. I could write the same as for the first about this girl, but the one thing I am certain of is big things ahead for this girl. Another great mover and handled very well.

Red bitch who has so much quality. I am glad I wrote all the goods and greats at the start. Where to begin with her? This one is a nose to tail stafford with enough class she could share it out and still have enough to win top honours. One day it will all fall into place for her, and I hope I am there when she gains her title.

2nd SEENWORSTAFF STORM WARNING AT JOEMIKESTE

Red bitch who is very unlucky to have met the first today. I would be proud to own either one of these two. They could have come from the same litter. She has a lot of the same qualities as the winner. It was hard to split them but someone has to make the hard choices and today it was me. Would take the two of them home.

1st TRUFFLESTAFF MASUD TUMAINI

Black brindle who is strong in all departments. Punishing head with eyes that looked straight at you, giving this bitch a sense of belonging in the ring. She has a body that was strong enough to carry her head. She won this class with ease, moved freely and handled well.

Mr. & Mrs. S. Hopkins
2nd OKWAHO LUCKY STAR

Lighter than first and looked like she enjoyed her day. The handler carried a ball which I thought she would rather be chasing than being in the ring. Nice tidy girl whose head shape was pleasing and a good body, she moved with an ease and she was handled well apart from the ball.

Mr. M. Farkas
Class 21: Post Graduate Bitch   (6, 2 absent)
1st HAMMYSTAFF HEAVEN KNOWS

Red and white girl who for those who believe the judge doesn’t have to touch the dog in the ring, this one very much proves you wrong. On first look she is a flashy marked Stafford BUT, on closer inspection i.e. putting your hands over her she is much more than that. For me her head markings deceive your eye with the white muzzle, but when you look at her in profile and feel the depth of her stop, then your hands tell you that this is a complete Stafford head. She has a body to match. Very plain from the ring side, stunning when you put your hands over it, moved freely and with ease, handled very well.

M. Brigden
2nd MAXSTA MADONNA

Black brindle bitch with a nice head shape. Strong and feminine, this girl was unlucky to meet the first today. On another day she wins hands down. Smart bitch all over who moved up and down the mat with ease for her handler.

1st SCORGUIE STOLEN KISSES

Brindle lady who stole my eyes today. I have seen her from the ring side but never laid my hands on her. If I could sum her up in three words they would be strength, power, and balance. She stood like a statue when her handler wanted her to, and filled up with animation. When on a loose lead she gave the impression of menace and her clean lines give her the classic Stafford look. Her head is to die for with ears that frame it for the almost perfect picture. Strong, straight front carries it off, plenty of rib and a back end so strong it could have been taken from an oil rig. She glides over the mat with grace and ease and was presented in top condition. It was a pleasure to award her her first but not her last CC and BIS.

Mr. & Mrs. McPhail
2nd ECLYPSTAFF THERE YOU GO AT KALVERIN

Another girl who met her match today, but they will change places I am sure. She has all the same qualities as the first but on a lighter frame. Very classy girl who pushed hard today. Her honours will come. Handled as ever perfectly, and moved freely.

Well here we go. I have never seen this bitch in the flesh and all the pictures I have seen, had another handler. I now know why she is a top top bitch. She has class written all over her, she is the nose to tail Stafford that I like to see. I asked someone after I had finished judging, who was the open class winner. Laughingly they told me "You thought you found something, ha ha!". Well she is something to find, at her age she still has it all going on. I would have loved to have gone over her in her heyday, but she still had enough to win today.

Mr. & Mrs. S. Hopkins
2nd WAYSTAFF SEA THE STARS

Brindle bitch, who stands there and says "I am a Stafford, come and fault me". Then you have to try her handler, who brings out the best of this girl. Today she met a legend and stood toe to toe and lost narrowly, she has all the right pieces in the right places to reach the top but was matched today. Moved freely and with ease.
